Intramuscular injection

Intramuscular injection requires a medical prescription and involves introducing the medication deep into the muscles.

The intramuscular administration regions are:

Anterior gluteus (hip)
Posterior gluteal (buttock)
Deltoid (shoulder)
Vastus lateral thigh (lateral aspect of the thigh)
Straight thigh muscle (front of the thigh)

Injecting a subcutaneous medication requires a medical prescription. It allows the medication to be introduced into the part of the skin called the hypodermis. Several medications such as insulin and some vaccines are administered this way.
