🎯 OBJECTIFS ET COMPÉTENCES DÉVELOPPÉES

The installation and management of the nasogastric tube are key skills for the nurse in a hospital and home setting. This practical training combines essential theory, demonstrations, and workshops on mannequins to acquire a perfect mastery of the placement, monitoring and prevention of the main risks and complications associated with the nasogastric tube.


Educational objectives

  • Understand the medical indications, regulatory framework, and responsibilities associated with nasogastric tube placement.

  • Master the preparatory steps, the insertion technique, the verification of the correct positioning and the secure fixing.

  • Anticipate, detect and manage complications: obstruction, poor posture, accidental aspiration, hemorrhage, discomfort, miscarriages.

  • Prevent the risk of infection and skin lesions, and ensure hygiene of the surroundings and the oral cavity.

  • Ensure clinical and documentary monitoring, organize nutritional and drug monitoring by tube.

  • Inform and support the patient and their loved ones, promote their autonomy for the secure management of the system at home.


Skills developed

  • Install a nasogastric tube on a manikin/simulator in accordance with the protocol and anatomy.

  • Control and validate the position (clinical techniques, radiology if indicated).

  • Maintain the system, monitor and react to incidents.

  • Administer medication and enteral nutrition by tube in accordance with the rules of dilution and safety.

  • Effectively educate the patient and those around them on the right gestures and the prevention of complications.

  • Document each step in the file and contact the physician if there is any difficulty.

📖 WORKSHOP CONTENT – Nasogastric Tube

Module 1: Basics, Indications and Regulations

  • Anatomy, Digestive and Respiratory System Physiology

  • Medical indications: feeding, drainage, suction, examinations

  • Legal framework and nursing responsibilities (prescription, protocol)

  • Choice of probe type and appropriate hardware

Module 2: Preparedness, Hygiene and Consent

  • Preparation of the equipment, the environment and the patient (fasting, nasal, oral)

  • Hygiene and aseptics, pain management and comfort

  • Patient information and informed consent

Module 3: Manikin insertion technique

  • Detailed installation steps

  • Nostril selection, measurement and lubrication

  • Installation, help from a colleague if necessary

  • Position verification (clinical and radiological), secure fixation

Module 4: Probe Monitoring and Maintenance

  • Monitoring of flows, symptoms, complications

  • Mouth/Nase Care, Drainage or Enteral Feeding

  • Equipment maintenance, probe change and removal

Module 5: Managing Complications and Risks

  • Obstruction, displacement, miscarriage, hemorrhage

  • Monitoring of clinical signs, course of action, emergency management

  • Prevention and early identification of infectious or mechanical complications

Module 6: Documentation, Communication and Education

  • Traceability and registration

  • Transmission of instructions to the team

  • Education of the patient and those around them (home care, nutritional monitoring, warning signs)

Module 7: Practical workshops and self-assessment

  • Placement and removal on mannequins, management of simulated scenarios

  • Validation quizzes, formal feedback and improvement avenues
