HOW CAN CERVICAL CANCER BE PREVENTED?
In order to prevent cervical cancer, it is recommended to get vaccinated against HPV and to have PAP tests done regularly.
IS THE PAP TEST PROCEDURE PAINFUL?
During the consultation, the nurse first conducts a brief data collection. Then, during the procedure, a speculum is inserted into the vagina to facilitate the removal. Then, using a brush, the sample of cells from the cervix is collected. After identification, the collected specimen is sent to the laboratory for analysis.
The PAP test procedure is not painful, but it is normal to feel some discomfort during or after a PAP test.
HOW IS THE PAPILLOMA VIRUS TRANSMITTED?
HPV is mainly transmitted through oral, vaginal or anal sexual contact with an infected person. Rarely can transmission from mother to baby be encountered at the time of delivery.
WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY PAP TEST RESULTS ARE ABNORMAL?
If your PAP test results are abnormal, your doctor may ask for an additional colposcopy test.
This examination assesses:
– An inflamed cervix.
– The presence of genital warts on the cervix.
– The presence of polyps on a non-cancerous cervix.
If the presence of abnormal cells is confirmed by colposcopy, a procedure will be recommended to remove them.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF CERVICAL CANCER?
A person with cervical cancer may experience the following symptoms:
Intermenstrual vaginal bleeding.
Pain in the lower abdomen, lower back, or groin.
Bleeding during sexual intercourse.
Urination pain.
Weight loss
Note, however, that cervical cancer can develop without any symptoms. Hence the interest in regular screenings.
